SFC Rodney Yano Dedication

The Armor Center at Fort Benning, Georgia, has announced the dedication of a new facility in honor of SFC Rodney J. T. Yano. SFC Yano was awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously for actions on January 1, 1969 while serving with Air Cavalry Troop, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment.

The dedication is schedule for 10:00 am, Friday, March 23, 2012. Guest speaker will be BG John C. "Doc" Bahnsen (USA Ret), Air Cavalry Troop commander and pilot of the aircraft involved in the incident. All Blackhorse troopers, family and friends are invited to attend. No invitation is necessary. Dress is casual. Show your colors - wear something Blackhorse!

The Armor School completed the move from Fort Knox to Fort Benning in September 2011 and combined with the Infantry School to become the Maneuver Center of Excellence (MCOE). The Armor School is an all new, state-of-the-art facility located in the Harmony Church area of Fort Benning.

To mark the completion of the move, in September 2011 the MCOE Headquarters building at Fort Benning was officially dedicated as McGinnis-Wickam Hall. Specialist Ross A. McGinnis was awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously for actions on December 4, 2006 while serving with the 1st Infantry Division in Iraq. Corporal Jerry Wayne Wickam was awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously for actions on January 6, 1968 while serving with F Troop, 2nd Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment in Vietnam.

Melinda,

I left out the meaning of "SF" in the APOSF96257 line of MIke's return address. The letters stand for "San Francisco".

Take care,

Melinda,

Here is the info I have found.

Michael J. Barber
71 Pearl Street North
Frewsburg, NY 14738-9563
(716) 569-5865

Here are the meanings of the return address:

SP/4 - Specialist 4th Class (MIke's rank)

The numbers in the second line are his Army service number.

K-3/11ACR - K Troop, 3rd Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment (MIke's unit)

APOSF96257 - Army Post Office 96257 (the numbers are a military equivalent to a civilian ZIP code)

I tried to send this info to your email address but I do not have access to it. I think only the web site administrator has access to your email address.

Anyway, I hope this helps you. If you have any more questions please feel free to email me at formercav@netzero.com

Take care,

John T. Tillman

Hello,

My name is Melinda Sprague. My father is Samuel "Rick" Fredrick Sprague and he was a member of this website until his passing in August of 2004. I've been doing some research about his time in the Army and came across many letters sent from Vietnam to my father in Oregon. These letters are very hard to decipher as the penmanship is not the best. This is the information I have:

My father was inducted into the Army on June 19th, 1968 and was honorably discharged in April 1970.

The return address on the letter is: (may not be all the way correct as the writing is really sloppy)
SP/4/M. Barber
054-42-9071
K-3/11ARC
APOSF96257

Also included in the letter is a home address which reads:
Mike Barber
RD #1 Pine Hill
Randolph N.Y. 14772

This letter was sent August 30th, 1970.

I've been having a hard time with all of his military paperwork, as I don't know much about it and some of the wording is confusing. I remember him talking about this man frequently and he is also in pictures with my father. I have gone through independent resources to track him down and will continue to do so. Is there any way that if this man is a member you could pass this message along with my information please? If you know of any other resources I might be able to use to find this man, any help would be greatly appreciated. Also, if you know what the numbers and letters in the return address are/stand for I would like to know that as well.

Thank you for your time,

Melinda Sprague

Hi all. I'd like to extend an invitation to all crew and support units of the Air Cav Troop in Vietnam to join us on a 11thcavaviation website that we have up and running and will be adding images/info/stories, etc to help build a history of the ACT in RVN. It is pretty bare bones right now but we will soon be adding to it. We are also (depending on interest) wanting to hold a mini-reunion in Shreveport, La. this summer in late July or early Aug. to gather as much info as possible (and also to have a great time on a River Boat Casino) Join us on the website and let us know what you think. If you have images that you would like to see on the site let me know and I will add those to our historical record. Allons!
